Music is a difficult business and so many musicians choose other careers. Many amateur pianists say ‘We know the joys and frustrations of being an amateur musician first hand. We primarily play for ourselves, but for us the desire to share music is equally strong. Through the Festival, there is an opportunity to share our creative efforts’.

The amateur piano world received a boost of publicity when the Texas-based Van Cliburn Competition started an amateur off shoot in 1999; however there has never been any official amateur piano event in the South Miami.

We really want to develop a local piano community through such events as it has been done in cities like Paris, Boston, and Fort Worth, knowing that the amateur pianists will fly in from all over the country and even all over the world. The South Miami has a wealth of musical talent. So it is time for all the South Florida piano amateurs to have their own forum!

The Miami Outstanding Piano Amateurs Festival – MOPAF - is in a certain sense an invitation for the amateur piano players, doctors, lawyers, journalists, writers, engineers, business man and woman to take the stage. The mission of MOPA is to give them the opportunity to perform and express themselves with like-minded musicians in a non-judgmental and friendly environment.

In 2010-2011 Season the performances of the Miami Outstanding Piano Amateurs Festival will be held at Steinway Piano Gallery in Coral Gables & Boca Raton. The Festival has already received a lot of interest. Six wonderful pianists from the United States and Japan are chosen to take part in the first concerts of the festival.

Do you qualify as an amateur?

Since the word for amateur stems from Latin “to love” the question is do you love the piano? However, after that the guidelines become more specific. You must be over thirty years of age, deriving your primary income from sources other than from public piano performance. You should not be pursuing a degree in piano performance. Music faculty members at the college/conservatory level are also not eligible. All other amateur piano players are invited to contact MOPAF for further information on dates, eligibility, and preparation requirements at contact@mirafeldman.com.

Please remember to pass this information on to your friends, colleagues and family who may not have been contacted and may enjoy the participation in “Miami Outstanding Piano Amateurs” Do not miss such a great opportunity to take part in the Festival and hear live performances of talented artists in the elegant atmosphere of Steinway Piano Gallery!
